Stephen Harper says agreement with Japan to talk free trade ‘a major step
forward’
TOKYO — Prime Minister Stephen Harper acknowledged the potential difficulties in securing a trade deal with Japan, and admitted some sectors of the economy will be viewing the launch of trade talks with some hesitation.
But the prime minister also said Canadian negotiators will work to get the best deal possible for the country, and the potential benefits for the economy as a whole are significant.
Harper and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced the formal launch of free trade negotiations on Sunday following a meeting in Tokyo during the second leg of Harper’s three-country tour through Asia, which comes a month after his visit to China.

PM returns to Ottawa after majority win
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has returned to Ottawa a day after Canadians elected his Conservative Party to form its first majority government.
Cheering supporters greeted Harper and his wife Laureen, their children Ben and Rachel, as well as his campaign staff as the Conservative plane landed at Ottawa airport Tuesday evening from his home riding in Calgary.
Speaking at a news conference earlier in the day in Calgary, hailed Quebec's "shift to federalism" in Monday night's election, which reduced the once-dominant Bloc Québécois to four seats in the province.
The prime minister added he is disappointed that his majority government does not have a larger foothold in Quebec, as most of the Bloc losses came from an unprecedented surge by Jack Layton's New Democrats.

Is Canada's Reform Party of the 1990s a Tea Party model?
Washington (CNN) -- Before anyone ever heard of the Tea Party movement, there was a grass-roots conservative group from out West that shook up the political status quo.
It happened in Canada more than 20 years ago, and the rebel Reform Party's rapid rise and eventual amalgamation into the political mainstream might offer some perspective on what is happening today on the U.S. political right.
In particular, the Reform Party's rise split the so-called conservative vote in Canada, helping the Liberal Party win three straight elections to stay in power for 13 years.

OTTAWA, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's decision to suspend Parliament has cost his party its lead in public support, a poll released on Wednesday found.
The Strategic Counsel poll, published by the Toronto Star, showed Harper's Conservatives with 31 percent popular support and the opposition Liberals with 30 percent, which would make an election a toss-up if one were held today.

In New Jersey, Republican Chris Christie has been running neck and neck with Democratic Governor Jon Corzine, the former Wall Street executive who has pumped $23 million of his own money into his campaign. A poll released on Monday gave the Republican a slight lead.
Independent candidate Chris Daggett trailed, and a key question concerned how many of Daggett's supporters would abandon him for Christie or Corzine and sway the race.
Obama campaigned with Corzine on Sunday and made a last-ditch appeal for the Democrat, trying to generate more enthusiasm for him.
"We will not lose this election if all of you are as committed as you were last year," he said. "So I want everybody in this auditorium to make a pledge that in these next 48 hours, you will work just as hard for Jon as you worked for me."
New Jersey polls close at 8 p.m. EST (0100 GMT Wednesday) but it could be some hours before the outcome is clear.
